Addressing the Skills Shortage

1/5/2008

Hazell Bros is part of a statewide campaign to assist TAFE Tasmania in strengthening its relationships with businesses. The aim of the campaign is to address the skills shortage, increasing productivity and improve the State's economy.

'Imagine how we can help grow your business' is TAFE's message to enterprise, in its quest to partner with industry to expand the skilled workforce and develop Tasmania for the future.

Geoffrey Hazell, Managing Director of Hazell Bros Group said his company recognised training and development as a key ingredient in the success of his business, and in building the economy.

"There was a period in the construction industry when there was no training done and today, as a result, we see the skills shortage.  You have to train so you have a growing workforce for the future.

"We recognise success depends on training, integrity, staff retention and reward.  Training ensures our employees feel a sense of ownership of the company.

"With training, TAFE Tasmania is equipping our people with the skills that will put our company in safe hands into the future," Mr Hazell said.

TAFE has launched television and print advertisements, featuring Mr Hazell.

TAFE Tasmania CEO, Malcolm White, said it recognised the training organisation had a significant leadership role to play in the labour and skills shortage, the biggest constraint on the State's economic prosperity in the short to medium term.

"TAFE Tasmania will now be broadening its focus to address labour market issues through innovative and productive partnerships with industry and creative alliances with labour market providers," Mr White said.

While TAFE Tasmania recognises it has a role to play, it is urging enterprise to partner with it, as Hazell Bros has done, to grow their own business, and also improve the future of the State.

"Industry needs to engage productively and meaningfully in training.  Training leads to recruitment, retention and workforce development.

"We need to support Tasmanian enterprise to build a strong skills base and more capable and productive workplaces," he said.
