MBA Award Winner

27/8/2008

Hazell Bros Group has won a Master Builders Tasmania Award 2008 for Excellence in Commercial and Civil Contracting.

Hazell Bros Managing Director Geoffrey Hazell said the Group won the category for projects over $10 million for the Cambridge Park development.

"We are extremely pleased to win an MBA award for Cambridge Park, which was a milestone project for Hazell Bros, as well as the Tasmanian construction industry," Mr Hazell said.

"Working with Prudentia Investments, Cambridge Park's developer, Hazell Bros has built Tasmania's first ever Harvey Norman Homemaker Centre.

"It is extremely satisfying for us as a Tasmanian company, to drive out to the airport and see what we have achieved for our clients - a multipurpose centre packed every day with Tasmanian consumers.

"The entire Cambridge Park project integrated the skills of Building and Civil Construction, and many other parts of the Hazell Bros business.

"The project consisted of the construction of a new Harvey Norman Super Store, several adjoining tenancies, large areas of external drainage, roads and car parks."

Mr Hazell said the scope of works included:

  • Base building package construction of 30,000m² Harvey Norman retail centre, including reinforced concrete piers and foundations, post tension concrete slabs and structural steel
  • Bulk civil works package, including earthworks for building pads and car park areas
  • Installation of in-ground stormwater and sewerage infrastructure
  • Construction of recreational bio-retention basin
  • Establishment of a fully functional site office (including offices, meeting rooms, lunch rooms, ablution facilities, power, phone, fax, and internet)
  • Construction of 800 sealed car park spaces
  • Operation and supply of all road and car park aggregates needed for the road project
  • Establish and operate an onsite mobile concrete batch plant to produce the estimated 10,000m³ of concrete required by the various phases of the work
  • Construction of Tasman Highway extension works to facilitate ingress and egress of traffic for complex
  • Liaison and coordination of electrical, structural and mechanical contractors
  • Subcontractor management of building trades

"Hazell Bros was also involved with the civil construction of the adjoining Hydro Tasmania Consulting offices, the first five star green building in Tasmania."
