Ulverstone Duplication Roadworks

Related Services Utilised

The Ulverstone Duplication Roadworks project is being undertaken for the Department of Infrastructure and Energy (DIER) and is stage two of the Bass Highway Penguin to Ulverstone duplication. The project is well underway and on schedule for completion ahead of the designated February 2008 target.

The two-lane, 5.5km road being constructed runs from the Forth Road Bridge at the eastern end to just west of the Leven River Bridge. Positioned generally on the south of the existing two-lane highway, the new highway will function as the westbound carriageway. The existing road, which is to remain virtually untouched, will carry eastbound traffic.

The management of traffic and public issues is largely a joint exercise between the Hazell Bros site team and DIER. A close working relationship ensures disruption to traffic and the public is minimised - a strength of the project.

Scope of Works

  • Construction of carriageway predominately on the northern side of the existing highway including a new highway bridge
  • A transition to the southern side of the existing highway
  • Construction of the new carriageway on the southern side of the existing highway, including construction of two new highway bridges
  • Modifications to the existing road pavement to improve shape and provide a new wearing course
  • Extension of the pedestrian underpasses
  • Erection of 5.5km of steel beam guardfence
  • Erection 5.0km of wire rope safety fence in the centre median between the two carriageways
  • Erection of 3600m2 of soundwall fences to reduce noise for residents adjacent the highway
