West Coast District Hospital

The West Coast District Hospital was an award winner at the Master Builders Association of Tasmania 2007 Housing and Construction Excellence Awards (new construction).

Scope of work

The West Coast District Hospital building works commenced in June 2005 and were completed by November 2006. The location and size of the project presented challenges in sourcing materials and accommodation. The weather conditions on the West Coast provided further challenges for the Team.

The project involved renovations to the Gaiety Hall and new building works to the Hospital.

Gaiety Hall was completely demolished internally, leaving only the external solid concrete walls and corrugated iron roof. New works commenced, including a new concrete slab, internal walls and ceilings. The building layout was designed to suit doctors consulting rooms, x-ray, dental health and child care services. All works were completed early to allow for the relocation of medical staff from the existing hospital.

This hospital project involved a new major two storey building. Construction methods and materials used were:

  • Concrete slab on ground and suspended
  • Precast concrete, brick veneer and colourbond walls
  • Timber trussed colourbond roof
  • Electrical, fire, communications, mechanical, lift and medical gas building services
  • Landscaping, roads, paths and car parks

The top level of concrete was constructed first to allow for protection of the lower level from the adverse weather conditions.
