Brighton Bypass (Southern) and Transport Hub

Related Services Utilised

The Federally funded Brighton Bypass and Transport Hub Project has been awarded to Hazell Bros and John Holland in joint venture. The project involves construction of a modern road-rail facility and freight distribution hub at Brighton, and several kilometres of four-lane highway through the Midlands.

The bypass will provide a new dual carriageway highway between the East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater and the existing Midland Highway north of Pontville, of which the Hazell-Holland JV is responsible for the Southern section.

The Transport Hub will span a total land area of approximately 50 hectares with provision for warehousing adjoining the rail intermodal and additional land for freight-related commercial development.

The primary aim of the project is to improve efficiency in the movement of goods between rail and road transport in Southern Tasmania, and improve safety for the large volume of traffic on the Midland Highway.

Hazell Bros, along with John Holland, will provide direct labour and plant for the majority of the bulk earthworks, civil works and in situ concrete works, and manage major subcontractors for completion of bituminous surfacing, installation of safety fences, landscaping, line marking, and piling works for the bridges.

As has been the case on DIER projects undertaken by Hazell Bros to date, close working relationships will underpin project management to ensure successful outcomes for all stakeholders.

Scope of works will include:

  • In excess of 1million cubic metres of earthworks
  • 5 bridge structures including 120m long rail tunnel
  • 5km rail track
  • 5km road
  • 25,000m2 hardstand area
  • Grade-separate interchanges to serve the Brighton Industrial Estate and Brighton township
  • Several overpass and underpass structures at road and rail crossings including two rail underpasses for the Tasmanian Main North/South Rail Line and some realignment of the Main Line railway
  • Upgraded roundabout and new roundabout at interchange
  • Road and rail infrastructure, including amenities and office buildings
  • New services and relocation of existing services
  • Service roads and ramps
